It is always the case that prevention of a disease is a better option than having to treat it. One of the reasons that people live to a greater age nowadays is a direct result of the prevention of diseases. One of the side effects of an aging population is the condition known as osteoporosis. The term osteoporosis specifically refers to the syndrome of fractures that occur in thinning bones. It is therefore obvious that one of the problems of diagnosing the condition is that people are not aware of its existence until they have been diagnosed with a fracture. Additionally, it is difficult to measure loss of bone mass in people who would have had no need to measure their bone density prior to the diagnosis.
There is much evidence that nutritional factors have a role to play in bone loss. It is obvious that calcium is the most important factor, and it has been shown that there is a positive correlation between calcium intake and balance. In menopausal woman there is a decrease in the calcium balance and in the efficiency in which her body can deal with the intake of calcium. It is known that estrogen loss leads to deterioration in calcium absorption, therefore the use of hormones prove to be especially useful as a preventative measure against osteoporosis in pre-menopausal women, the use of load bearing exercises is also recommended for both pre and perimenopausal women.
