The philosophy of Prostate Cancer

It is said by many that prostate cancer is as much a philosophy as a disease. This is because of the many different treatment choices that can be taken and by the fact that sometimes the best treatment option is to do absolutely nothing at all; the reasoning for this is that some prostate cancers are so slow growing that the sufferer is more likely to die from old age than from the cancer itself.

With the exception of African American men, prostate cancer is the biggest cancer killer behind Lung Cancer, with around 40,000 of the 300,000 people diagnosed with the condition in the United States of America dying from it each year. The chances of a man developing prostate cancer in his life time are around thirteen percent.

Although prostate cancer can not be cured unless diagnosed very early, there have been tremendous inroads in its control by the use of sophisticated surgery, hormonal drugs and advances in radiation technologies. Furthermore, many diagnostic techniques are now available that will detect prostate specific antibodies in the blood; an increase in these antigens is generally a sign that something is irritating or inflaming the prostate, whether it be benign or cancerous. If there is a high level of prostate specific antigens in the blood it is commonplace to have a prostate biopsy to check for prostate cancer.
