Behind the Beatles lyrics – I’m Down

The Beatles wrote I’m Down as an attempt to replace the Little Richard song ‘Long Tall Sally’ that they often used in their live sets. According to Paul McCartney the song was extremely difficult to write, and though three chord songs sound simplistic they are some of the hardest to get right; they wanted to write a ‘corker’ to get the crowd going with great sing-along lyrics.
The Beatles openly admit that they came nowhere near to recreating the Little Richard sound with ‘I’m Down’, and felt the closest that they ever came was with ‘I saw her standing there’; the first track off their first album! Nonetheless, on their 1965 and 1966 tours of America the Beatles always finished their concerts with the track, and it did get the audiences buzzing. However, it is fitting that for their last ever concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco that they closed the set with ‘Long Tall Sally’.
The Beatles first met Little Richard when they shared a bill at the Tower ballroom in New Brighton in 1962. The Beatles were relative unknowns at the time having just released Love Me Do the week previously. The Beatles, especially Paul loved the dynamics of Little Richard’s songs and performances; they regularly played many of his songs at their live events with ‘Rip it up’, ‘Good Golly Miss Molly’, ‘Tutti Frutti’ and ‘Lucille’ being staples of their early shows.
