Behind the Beatles lyrics – Lovely Rita

Paul McCartney had an American friend around who noticed a traffic warden and said “I see you got meter maids over here these days’. Paul loved this expression and quickly got the idea for Rita Meter Maid in his head. At first he was going to write a song about hating traffic wardens but after tinkering on his piano he decided that the song should be about loving the traffic warden. Hence, the story about a shy office worker trying to seduce Lovely Rita the Meter Maid.

Like many of the Beatles songs there is another story about how the lyrics to ‘Lovely Rita’ came about. A traffic warden called Meta Davis handed out a parking ticket to Paul McCartney who upon reading the ticket enquired if Meta was her real name. Though Paul spent a few minutes speaking to Meta it is pretty certain that he did not try to seduce her as she was twenty two years older than him, and had a teenage daughter who used to hang around Abbey Road Studios on the look out for the Beatles. It is thought by many that Paul had already written the song and was simply gratifying Meta when he realised the similarities in name.
